Growing up, I was very shy and did not have a lot of friends. When I went to college, I decided to overcome this and become a more outgoing person. Working as a Facebook power-user, the same approach I used in meeting people in the real world also applies in social media.
Here are a few tips to get you started making new friends on Facebook:
1. Find something in common—work, school, location, friends, then introduce yourself using that thread.
2. Add a short message to your friend request, like, "Hi Jim, I see that you are also (common thread) and into (interest). I too, am (use common thread/interest). May I keep up with you on Facebook?" With a short introduction, 9 out of 10 times, they will confirm.
3. Join Groups and Like Pages on Facebook and connect first with the Administrator/s. Like a cocktail party, you first tune in to what's going on. Post comments on the Wall either in response to questions or just for helpful links to share with the others in the group. Make yourself a valued member of their community.
4. When you confirm the friend request of others, visit their Wall and thank them for the connection request. Find something in common and build rapport with your new friend using that thread.
As a business person, I build my network in facebook using this method. It's fun and it's easy. It's like fishing. You put your bait out and see how many bites you get.
